Ulu Tiram attack: Suspect not JI member, initial link made due to father's past, says IGP

KUALA LUMPUR: The suspect who was shot dead after attacking the Ulu Tiram police station is not a member of Jemaah Islamiah (JI), says Tan Sri Razarudin Husain.

The Inspector-General of Police said his initial statement that the suspect was linked to JI was based on information that the suspect's father was involved with the terror group.

"Our data showed that the suspect's 62-year-old father was a member of JI.

"However, upon further investigation, we discovered that the suspect had no connections with any terror group, including JI," he said when contacted on Saturday (May 18).

The IGP said the police are still investigating the motive behind the attack that killed two policemen.

"The investigation is still ongoing to uncover the suspect's motive," he said.

Earlier, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the man who stormed into the Ulu Tiram police station, killing two and injuring a third policeman before being shot dead, was acting alone.

"Based on interrogations of over 40 individuals and checks on the suspect's house, the man was acting as a lone wolf.

"Police investigations started right after the incident, without delays, including checking profiles or police databases on similar incidents.

"As such, we have called a total of 46 individuals for interrogations to assist in the investigation.

"Based on early investigations, we found that the perpetrator acted alone.

"It is a lone wolf attack, but he was driven by a certain motivation that only he understood as he did not mix around with people," he had said in a press conference at the Johor police headquarters. - Star
