A Malacca Bersatu leader has deleted a social media post featuring an image of a box of condoms that targeted PAS Youth chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden, suggesting that his father should have used contraception.
Hishamuddin Abdul Karim, who is the state Bersatu information chief, removed the post after courting fierce backlash and threats of legal action from Afnan.
“This decision was made after I reassessed the content of the statement, as well as taking into account the advice and views of the party leadership that every statement issued should be guided by wisdom, etiquette, and disciplined political communication.
“As a party leader, I always respect the principle that differences in political views should be expressed firmly but with restraint, without undermining professionalism and decorum in public discourse,” he said in a Facebook post today.
The controversial post by Hishamuddin (above) had read: “Assessing Afnan Hamimi’s speech post in Kedah, I believe that if Taib (Afnan’s father and former PAS leader) had been more careful, he would not have had a disrespectful and ill-mannered child.”
Taib was a grand imam of the National Mosque and a parliamentarian representing the Baling constituency in Kedah.
In response, Afnan said that as a politician, he is prepared to face any political attacks, but dragging his father into the matter crossed the line of political decency.
“Being in the political arena, exchanges and attacks are normal. But when those outside the arena are dragged into it and attacked without restraint, that is not gentlemanly.
“He is a senior leader of a political party - I don’t need to name which one. When he insults my father, it is very immature. This is an insult to dignity. This is a personal attack,” he said.
Afnan also said that he and his family are consulting lawyers to consider legal action against Hishamuddin.
Hishammuddin, who is also the Kota Melaka Bersatu division chief, was believed to have targeted Afnan over the PAS leader’s recent speech in the state. - Mkini
