Hishamuddin Abdul Karim (left) said he had taken note of criticisms about comments he made against Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden and his family, and will be ‘more responsible and careful’ in the future.

Melaka Bersatu information chief Hishamuddin Abdul Karim has apologised to the PAS Youth chief and his family over comments that critics slammed as rude.

Hishamuddin also deleted the comments, which he had posted on Facebook, after the Bersatu leadership advised him to do so.

“I apologise for the phrase and the tone of the message which may have led to my comments being misunderstood, caused unease, or offended any party,” he told FMT, adding that the apology stemmed from a sense of responsibility to uphold “civility, ethics, and professionalism in political discourse”.

He also said he decided to apologise to Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden and his family after reviewing the content of the statement he published on social media.

Yesterday, Hishamuddin said that if Afnan’s father, Taib Azamudden, had taken precaution, he would not have an ill-mannered and disrespectful child.

He also uploaded a picture of a box of condoms.

His comments were in response to a speech by Afnan in Kedah.

Following the comments, Afnan, who is the Alor Setar MP, said he was mulling legal action against Hishamuddin.

Melaka PAS information chief Ahmad Bilal Rahudin had also urged Hishamuddin to retract his statement and apologise.

“Such a posting is not only insulting but also highlights (Hishamuddin’s) shallowness and unhealthy politicking,” he said.

This evening, Hishamuddin admitted that while differing views and criticisms are the norm in a democracy, one should not go overboard with criticism and must be tactful.

“I take note of the views and will ensure that I am more responsible and careful in future,” he said. - FMT
