KUALA LUMPUR:
Malaysia Stadium Corporation (PSM) CEO Ilyas Jamil pleaded not guilty in the sessions court here today to seven counts of corruption involving more than RM1 million linked to a tender for upgrading the National Squash Centre in Bukit Jalil.

Ilyas, 42, pleaded not guilty after the charges were read out before judge Suzana Hussin.

All seven charges were framed under Section 16(a)(B) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, punishable under Section 24(1) of the same Act.

For the first charge, Ilyas is accused of soliciting RM1,005,000 from contractor Yap Yeow Kuen, 59, as an inducement to appoint Aerolux Power Constructions Sdn Bhd as the successful bidder for a RM8.73 million project to upgrade courts and sports facilities at the National Squash Centre in Kuala Lumpur Sports City.

The offence was allegedly committed at the PSM office in Sri Petaling on Feb 24.

For the remaining six charges, Ilyas is accused of receiving gratification amounting to RM450,000 from Yap in seven transactions between Feb 25 and April 13 as an inducement linked to the same project.

The payments were allegedly received at the PSM office and a restaurant in Pavilion Bukit Jalil.

Deputy public prosecutor Nuralis Mat told the court that the offence was non-bailable, but that bail could be granted at the court’s discretion, taking into account the accused’s position, the seriousness of the offence, and the risk of flight.

The prosecution proposed bail of RM200,000 with one surety, and additional conditions requiring Ilyas to surrender his passport until the disposal of the case and to report to the MACC office once a month.

However, defence counsel Yusmadi Yusoff asked the court to set a lower bail amount, arguing that a high sum would be financially burdensome for his client.

“My client has a school-going child. Today, I learned that he has been suspended from his job and has no other job to support his family.

“I propose an amount between RM50,000 and RM80,000. I think it’s a considerable amount,” he said, adding that his client had fully cooperated with investigations and submitted the relevant documents, including a statutory declaration and a police report.

After hearing submissions from both sides, judge Suzana allowed bail of RM100,000 with one surety and ordered Ilyas to surrender his passport until the conclusion of the case.

The court also ordered Ilyas to report to the MACC office once a month and warned him not to interfere with witnesses.

July 27 was fixed for case mention. - FMT
