Deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi says a Bombardier aircraft, three helicopters, and 52 officers and men from various agencies will be deployed to the hotspots.
Deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said Indonesian president Prabowo Subianto gave his approval during their meeting at Istana Hambalang.
“President Prabowo welcomed the offer, meaning he has given approval for Malaysia to join efforts to address the haze and fires in Kalimantan,” Zahid, who is on a working visit to Jakarta, told a press conference today.
The assistance includes deployment of a Bombardier CL-415MP aircraft, three helicopters, and 52 officers and personnel from the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma), the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) and the Royal Malaysian Air Force.
Zahid, who is also the chairman of the Central Disaster Management Committee, said foreign minister Mohamad Hasan had been tasked with coordinating assistance with Nadma, MMEA, the Malaysian meteorological department, the fire and rescue department and other agencies.
He said the assistance was not merely a short-term measure to put out the fires, as both countries had also discussed and agreed on longer-term measures to prevent haze from recurring.
Zahid said Prabowo informed him during the meeting that there were still 1,426 hotspots in Kalimantan, while the Indonesian government had taken legal action against 95 companies involved in open burning in the Borneo region.
Asked if any Malaysian companies were among the 95, he said no such information had been provided so far, although the Indonesian authorities were looking into possible Malaysian involvement. - FMT
