MCA delegates vote yes for EGM

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 22 — MCA will hold an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) on March 13 to discuss constitutional changes.

Delegates were overwhelmingly in favour of the move as 2,201 delegates, or 93.18 per cent of the general assembly, placed their signatures on the application submitted to MCA secretary-general Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha earlier today.

“This shows party members place the party’s interests first,” MCA deputy president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai told the reporters.

“I’m confident our delegates are mature and have made the right choice for the good of the party.”

The MCA leadership is looking to reduce the waiting period needed following a general election before party elections can be postponed from 42 to 36 months, in a bid to delay potentially fractious internal polls until after the next general election.

Article 167 of the MCA constitution currently stipulates that the party can only decide to postpone elections 42 months after the last general election.

Party elections are due this March, only 36 months after the last general election that took place in March 2008.
