Constitutional Monarch?

• I was disturbed upon reading a news piece that appeared in one of the online news portal that made an allegation about the intervention of the Selangor Ruler in the administration of the assembly. I was not sure of the allegation till I read Aziz Bari comments on the subject matter.

• Legally it does appear that the Sultan has overstepped his authority in demanding the SLA to transfer all powers related to the administration of MAIS directly to him. This makes Selangor the only State Religious Authority to become independent of the state administration and directly control by the Sultan. It is a known fact that the conduct and behavior of many of our Sultan’s are not exemplary and not comparable to the prophet of any of the early days caliph. I wonder who in MAIS will stand up and so NO to HRH if he demands to spend the monies in Zakat Fund in a way that he likes.

• It was upsetting enough to read the manner on how the law was change. What is more upsetting is the fact that the entire state assemblyman from both side of the political camps that had approved the bill. No one had the spine to stand up and said no to something that is principally in proper. While I understand the pressure Khalid is facing, I would have expected the state opposition to back him up and not to support the bill.

• Their failure to make a principal stand on this matter means that they are not fit to be a lawmaker. There are things that can be politicize and there are things that cannot be done. It appears that for the state to revert back to its original practices and to be inline with the practices in other states is by passing another law when they have 90% control of the SLA or the FG and SSG is ruled by the same party.

• This is indeed a sad day for the people of Selangor.
