Perak assembly: Uproar over 'political prostitute' jibe

Pandemonium broke out in the Perak state assembly, on its third day of sitting, today, following a verbal exchange between the government and the opposition assemblypersons over one of the latter’s remarks which likened deputy speaker Hee Yit Foong to a “political prostitute” and a “frog”.

hee yit foong pc at kl 050409 02Hee (left) then asked Nga Kor Ming (DAP-Pantai Remis), who was debating the 2012 state budget, to withdraw the statement as it was an insult to women.

“It is an insult to women. Retract, or else I will not allow you to debate. Your mother and grandmother are also women,” she said.

However, Nga refused to do so and said he was neither accusing anyone nor mentioning any names when referring to “political prostitute”.

This prompted Hamidah Osman (BN-Sungai Rapat) and Dr Wan Norashikin Wan Noordin (BN- Kampung Gajah) to stand and insisted on Nga to do so.

This led Menteri Besar Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, and seconded by Hamidah, to propose for the sitting to be adjourned to calm down the situation.

Hee then adjourned the sitting for five minutes.

NONEHowever, when the sitting continued, Nga (right) went on with his debate and refused to retract his words, despite being asked three times by Hee to do so.

Tajol Rosli Ghazali (BN-Pengkalan Hulu) then rose from his seat and said: “We heard the word that was uttered, which was ‘political prostitute’. I want to ask this assembly whether the word is allowed here, if not, it should be retracted”.

Tajol Rosli also said that if Nga still refused to retract the word, Hee could order him out of today’s sitting, and this was seconded by Jamaluddin Mohd Radzi (Independent-Behrang).

NONEWhen Hee ordered Nga to leave the state assembly hall, a few opposition representatives, including V Sivakumar (DAP-Tronoh) rose to object and demanded Hee to leave the hall for saying “Does the opposition representative like prostitutes? Is so, I can bring”.

State assembly speaker R Ganesan (left), who then took over to preside over the sitting, said Nga had uttered the words “political prostitute” and “frog”, but refused to retract them despite being given several chances to do so.

He ordered Nga to leave the hall and asked Hamdi Abu Bakar (BN-Pengkalan Baru) to continue with the budget debate.

Nga left the assembly hall, followed by other opposition members, led by Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin (Pas-Pasir Panjang) and Ngeh Koo Ham.
