Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak today announced a special RM100 million fund to set up 1Malaysia For Youth (IM4U) volunteer programme.
Dubbed the Dana Sukarelawan 1Malaysia (Dre1M) programme, it will be managed by a special task force and governed by a board of trustee, chaired by Najib, to ensure the smooth implementation of activities.
Najib said that the fund works as a "seed money" for youth aspiring to carry out volunteer activities aimed at the betterment of the nation and society.
"With the IM4U programme, we will start not a wave of riots and street demonstration, but a wave that will spread throughout the country, aimed at building a better Malaysia through the spirit of volunteerism amongst youths," he said.
The IM4U programme launch at the KLCC Esplanade today attracted some 50,000 youth, according to event organisers.
Najib attended the whole-day event and visited booth set up by various government departments, agencies and non-governmental bodies that will be involved in organising volunteer activities.
