Home Ministry had recently made public the names of 49 unlawful societies, mostly triads that involved in serious criminal activities.
Three of those triads are registered under Registrar of Societies (ROS) according to ROS director general Abdul Rahman Othman.
But at the same time, Rahman also informed Pakatan Rakyat (PR) that ROS could not process the coalition’s application filed in 2009 because of their failure to notify ROS about changes in its pro-tem committee.
Rahman’s explanation had irked PKR secretary general Saifuddin Nasution.
“Even organisations that are deemed dangerous by Home Ministry could receive approval from ROS, what more PR that has no illegal gangs, our application should have been approved,” Saifuddin lamented in a press conference Sept 3.
The former Machang MP alleged that ROS has been quiet on PR’s application since it filed its application on November 30, 2009.
“There is no black and white from ROS on our status,” said Saifuddin.
Citing ROS’ key performance indicator (KPI), Saifuddin said, PR should have been informed of the application status within 30 days from the date of submission.
“What happened in that 30 days of our application? Did PR receive any letter from ROS? There was no letter from ROS,” he added.
PR’s application was filed by Zaid Ibrahim who had resigned. In 2011, Tumpat MP Kamaruddin Jaafar was appointed to replace Zaid as pro-tem committee chairman.
Zaid’s resignation has been used by ROS as reason not to process PR’s application.
If necessary, Saifuddin said PR would file a new application with Kamaruddin as the pro-tem chairman.
