KUCHING-The new Head of State Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud received a grand welcome on arrival at Kuching International Airport (KIA) at 8.55pm yesterday.
Taib, accompanied by wife Puan Sri Ragad Kurdi Taib, arrived from Kuala Lumpur after receiving his instrument of appointment as the seventh Head of State from Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Tuanku Abdul Halim M u’adzam Shah.
Taib succeeds Tun Datuk Patinggi Abang Muhammad Salahuddin whose term of office ended yesterday.
Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem and wife Puan Sri Jamilah Anu as well as state cabinet ministers, heads of government departments and community leaders were among the 500 or so people who waited at the airport to welcome the new Head of State.
Also present were Taib’s children Dato Sri Sulaiman Abdul Rahman Taib, Datuk Seri Mahmud Abu Bekir Taib, Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib and Jamilah Hamidah Taib.
Taib and entourage then proceeded to the VIP lounge for prayer. They spent a brief moment mingling with the crowd before he left for home.
Taib will be sworn in as the seventh Head of State at the State Legislative Building at 9.30am today. -BP
