Ministry denies Deepak got RM40m loan

The government never ordered the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry or Bank Rakyat to sanction an interest-free RM40 million loan to carpet trader Deepak Jaikishan, the Finance Ministry said today.

Deepak, who is said to have a close relationship with Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and his wife Rosmah Mansor, was earlier reported to have obtained the loan, interest-free, for a term of 30 years.

"No such loan was given out by Bank Rakyat to any businessman and there was no ministerial interference," Deputy Finance Minister Ahmad Maslan (left) told Parliament today while wrapping up the debate on the Supplementary Supply Bill.

It was previously alleged that the Domestic Trade, Cooperation and Consumerism Minister Hasan Malek did not renew the contract of former Bank Rakyat chief Sabbaruddin Chik because the latter did not approve the interest-free loan for Deepak.

I have checked with the minister, and there is no relation between these two matters," Ahmad Maslan said, referring to the end of Sabbaruddin's tenure, which coincided with the reported loan approval for Deepak.

"The minister (Hasan Malek) has said that he welcomes any investigation regarding corruption on the matter," he added.

Deepak has previously been involved in several controversies due to his political ties, including his alleged knowledge of murdered Mongolian model Altantuya Shariibuu.
