Speaker Yeoh slams Umno's fickle hudud fling

Selangor state assembly speaker Hannah Yeoh today slammed the Umno assemblyperson for submitting an ill-prepared motion on hudud and then withdrawing it without any reason given.

Although she accepted the decision of Sungai Air Tawar assemblyperson Kamarol Zaki Abdul Malik (right) todrop the motion, Yeoh said such a fickle move reflected poorly on the character of the assemblyperson.

"Every assemblyperson has an inherent duty to uphold the integrity and preserve the sanctity of the state assembly by not treating it carelessly and haphazardly. I view this move by the assemblyperson from Umno as a blatant political stunt.

"If an assemblyperson is not ready or prepared to debate or stand by his or her motion, he or she should never have wasted the state assembly’s time by tabling it in the first place," Yeoh said in a press statement.

Kamarol raised eyebrows on both sides of the political divide when he presented his motion to Yeoh earlier this week, calling on Selangor assembly to debate on whether the state was ready to implement hudud.

Brickbats from Umno's partners

The motion caused a stir as it mimicked the move of Islamist party PAS seeking the implementation of hudud in Kelantan, even though Umno has in the past opposed such a move.

The Umno move immediately earned it brickbats even from its partners in the BN, MCA and Gerakan.

But after Yeoh approved the motion, the Umno assemblypersons said today they were withdrawing it to avoid further misunderstanding as the Chinese media flocked to question Umno’s stand on hudud.

"The state assembly is the rightful place for assemblypersons to speak up for their constituents and to participate honourably and productively in legislative processes," Yeoh said.

"I strongly remind Adun Sungai Air Tawar and all assemblypersons, be it government backbenchers or opposition members, not to misuse and abuse the Standing Orders in tabling motions for debate."
