SHAH ALAM - Sirul Azhar Umar should tell Australian media all about the murder of Altantuya Shaariibuu since the country has given him a lifeline by refusing to return him to Malaysia where he is sentenced to hang, a PAS MP said today.
Shah Alam lawmaker Khalid Samad pointed out that while former police commandos Sirul and Azilah Hadri were convicted of murdering the Mongolian translator, no motive for the killing was ever established despite the long-drawn case.
“... I want to ask Sirul to explain in full to the Australian media, why he had killed Altantuya.
“This will continue to be an issue until all the questions are answered,” he told reporters at a press conference here.
Sirul and Azilah were charged with the murder of 28-year-old Altantuya in 2006 and convicted in 2009.
They were freed after the appellate court acquitted them in 2013, but last Tuesday, the Federal Court reversed the acquittal and sent them back to hang, marking the end to the eight-year saga.
Sirul was a no-show during the Tuesday hearing, however, and it was later revealed that the former police commando was in Australia and was unable to return due to a lack of funds.
On Thursday, Australian paper Sydney Morning Herald reported an unnamed Australian Attorney-General’s Department spokesman as saying that Australia’s extradition legislation prohibited someone from being sent back to another country for an offence punishable by death, unless that country pledged not to carry out a death sentence.
In response, Malaysia said yesterday that it will file for an extradition order from the Australian court if its government refuses to hand Sirul over.
In Malaysia, a mandatory death sentence is imposed for murder and drug trafficking offences, while Australia opposes capital punishment. - Malay Mail
