PETALING JAYA - The picture of a Perodua Kelisa inside a bank may look like an attempted bank robbery.
However, it was actually a honest mistake by a 70-year-old man who accidentally put the car in “drive” and crashed into the bank’s automated teller machine (ATM) section.
The incident took place on Sunday evening when a retired army officer withdrew cash from the CIMB bank in Damansara Uptown at 7.30pm.
Petaling Jaya traffic police chief Deputy Supt Mohamad Roy Suhaimi Sarif said the man had found a parking spot in front of the entrance.
“After using the ATM, he got into his car and intended to reverse and drive off,” he said.
“However, he didn’t realise he had put the car in drive mode and thought he was pressing the brake when he had actually hit the accelerator.”
That sent the car across the sidewalk and into the ATM section of the bank.
“The car shattered glass panels before hitting a wall next to the bank’s ATMs,” he said.
Mohamad Roy said there was no one in the bank at the time and the ATMs were not damaged.
“The bank’s management lodged a report yesterday morning and we have decided to just issue a summons against the man. It was a sincere mistake,” he said.
The retired army officer was not injured and both parties will claim insurance to bear the cost for repairs.
