Its president Datuk Ibrahim Ali said Dr Mahathir was not accusing, but just asking that Sirul’s claims be investigated.
"Mahathir is not accusing. He is asking to investigate Sirul's statement that he was ordered," he added.
Dr Mahathir wrote in his blog chedet.cc today that various allegations have been made against prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, and that none of them had been adequately answered, including the murder of Altantuya and the claims made by Sirul, who was a former bodyguard of Najib's.
Noting Sirul's claim that he had been "under orders" to kill Altantuya, Dr Mahathir said such an allegation ought to be investigated because Sirul had worked for Najib.
"This is a human life. It would be cruel if Sirul were subjected to the death penalty for carrying out instructions," he wrote.
When asked to comment on Dr Mahathir's statement that Najib was weak and that people have started to lose hope, Ibrahim said: "Datuk Najib is strong in Umno. He commands support from Umno, Umno division leaders; whether he commands support from the public, I don’t know, those are two different things."
