The PM's speech yesterday will result in Umno closing ranks, says the Cheras Umno chief.
PETALING JAYA: Cheras Umno chief Syed Ali Alhabshee has welcomed Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s declaration yesterday that he would not be cowed into quitting his positions in Putrajaya and Umno.
In a press statement uploaded to his blog, Syed Ali noted the firmness in Najib’s voice and said he expected it to result in Umno closing ranks around the party president.
“Najib’s determination was obvious,” he said. “It proved that the Prime Minister was sincere and committed to the rakyat’s cause and would continue to develop the nation in spite of the multitude of challenges he faces.”
Syed Ali said he took the position that Najib was free from blame for the current political turmoil in the country.
“Why pressure him to resign when he has proven to be a prime minister who places the rakyat’s interest above everything else?” he said.
Yesterday, in a speech in Tawau that was remarkable for its directness, Najib said he would not back down despite pressure from various quarters, including former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad, whom he named.
Syed Ali said the courage Najib showed in his speech would increase the public’s confidence in his administration.
“I saw sincerity in all that he said and a willingness to take responsibility for them,” he added. “Indeed, the Prime Minister appeared undaunted by his critics, particularly social media users.
“The time has come for Umno members and leaders to once again unite into a formidable force to face the next general election.”
