The rapidly changing political landscape allows for new opportunities, including the formation of a truly inclusive political party, says G25 leader Noor Farida Ariffin.
Instead of a forming a new coalition, Noor Farida said only one new party with the right ideals would suffice.
"I hope we can have a 'third force' in politics. A new multiracial party of moderates in the form of a new political party will put an end to racial politics.
"However, unless and until a new, racially inclusive political party with a charismatic leader emerges, it will be good for politics in this country if DAP and PKR would dissolve and together with the progressives from PAS, merge into one party.
"It would mark the beginning of a real two-party system in Malaysia," Noor Farida (photo) told Malaysiakini.
Her comments come in the wake of the declaration by DAP and PKR that Pakatan Rakyat has ceased to exist.
Although Noor Farida believes that the merger she suggests will be ideal, in reality, she said, it would be difficult to achieve such an ideal.
"Our politicians, being what they are, I don't expect this to happen anytime soon. But we certainly need a game changer!" she added.
G25 is a group of prominent Malay retired civil servants who emerged in December last year to urge Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to reign in on extremists.
The group comprise former judges, scholars and diplomats, among others. - M'kini
