MCA EYEOPENER FOR NAJIB: BE CAREFUL, WE WILL SUPPORT MOVE TO IMPEACH YOU - DELEGATES
Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's RM2.6 billion imbroglio became one of the focal points of the MCA Youth annual general meeting today.
One delegate said if the prime minister does not come clean on the matter, Malaysia could witness a Watergate scandal, which forced US president Richard Nixon to step down, taking place here.
Another delegate said the MCA leadership would quit the Cabinet if Najib is found to have committed any wrongdoing.
Kepong representative Tan Hock Guan said the people are confused by Najib's contradictory statements on the RM2.6 billion.
Citing the quote 'honesty is the best policy', he urged Najib to come clean over the matter, implying that he would face the same fate as Nixon if he did not.
"In the 1MDB case, regarding the RM2.6 billion transferred into the (prime minister’s) personal account, the statement has been changed over and over. This is reminiscent of the Watergate scandal in the 1970s.
"Nixon did not come clean then, leading to his fate (resignation).
"After all, Nixon did not tell the truth, did not come clean, even intervened in the investigation consistently, and the problem grew bigger and bigger.
"He buried himself in his own trap," said Tan.
In 1974, Nixon tendered his resignation under immense pressure after influential newspaper Washington Post revealed that the Republican president bugged the headquarters of his political opponents, the Democrats.
Why change AG, why not sue Dr M?
Meanwhile,Tan Chee Tong, from Pendang (Kedah), said the MCA leadership would give up their Cabinet posts if the prime minister had breached the law.
He also fired a volley of questions at Najib, urging him to clear the air.
"Why did you change the attorney-general during the investigation of 1MDB? Why did you appoint the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) members to be Cabinet members?
"Why did you sue others rather than (former premier) Dr Mahathir (Mohamad), who was outspoken over many matters? Do you agree with Mahathir’s statements? " he asked.
"Some people say that we dare not quarrel with Najib because we want to safeguard our government positions.
"I believe MCA and MCA Youth will not stay in the government if the truth came out (and Najib is found guilty)," he added.
The RM2.6 billion has been described as political donation from a Middle Eastern source ahead of GE13 and Najib has repeatedly denied using public funds for personal gain.
Another MCA Youth delegate Lim Tee Siong from Ayer Hitam, Johor, urged Najib to relinquish his finance minister post if he was “too busy”.
He said the Finance Ministry had been inefficient in refunding input tax with regard to the Goods and Services Tax (GST).
"We the traders have submitted (GST) to the ministry. The government promised to complete it in two weeks, but keeps delaying it month after month. Traders cannot take it.
"I implore the prime minister, if he is too busy, please give up the finance minister post to a suitable candidate,” he added.
The MCA Youth AGM passed 17 resolutions, including urging the government to resolve the 1MDB issue to regain investor confidence. - M'kini
