There was much talk, speculation and rumor-mongering in the country that besieged Prime Minister, Najib Tun Razak, had conducted negotiations with the powers-that-be, the power brokers in Malaysia, to work out a succession plan.
Many Malaysians are up-in-arms with the administration of the nation by Najib and there are growing calls from all segments of society calling for the dismissal of Najib as he has basically caused a mess by his governance and his inept and weak leadership.
With Mahathir Mohammad, ex-prime minister of Malaysia, leading the charge among the power brokers in this country to oust Najib, there is now an array of activities being conducted covertly to seek the removal of Najib from the office of prime minister.
These plans, however, have hit a snag as Najib is unwilling to quit as prime minister unless he is given an assurance that no legal or criminal action will be taken against him for the atrocities and wrongdoings he committed as prime minister.
Mahathir and those in the league of power brokers in this country are absolutely livid with rage at Najib for clinging on to power though his resignation was sought early last year over the disclosure of the 1MDB fiasco.
Due to his obstinacy and defiance, Najib has inflicted even more damage to the country and economy and Mahathir is of the view and opinion and that some of the damage Najib has done may be irreversible.
This is why in formulating a succession plan, no ‘safe passage’ has been included for Najib as Mahathir firmly believes he must pay the price for his reckless and irresponsible governance of the country, especially its finances, and to which both Najib and Rosmah are believed not to have agreed.
Negotiations hit a snag
Owing to Najib still not reluctant and unwilling to step down, and on the contrary, plotting and scheming even more devilishly to stay on in power, the powers-that-be that is being led by Mahathir face a formidable challenge as currently negotiations for Najib’s removal have hit a snag.
But the feisty Mahathir, though aging and vulnerable, is displaying a lot of tenacity and grit as he ups the ante on seeking to oust Najib from office but he is vehement and uncompromising in his view that not only Najib but Rosmah as well should pay the price for their corrupt leadership of the nation.
This is why currently, in the latest of the saga on ousting Najib, there is a deadlock. The stalemate, if not resolved soon, is set to precipitate and prolong a crisis that has hit the nation into a protracted state in which life in this country is set to further deteriorate.
As Mahathir braces himself, many Malaysians who are watching the unfolding drama are wondering when he will poise himself to strike the killer blow to which Mahathir’s aides are saying that the aging and maverick politician is just waiting for the right time.
Once the time is right, those from the Mahathir camp assert, the erstwhile prime minister will bring about the removal from the office of Najib and try to reorganize and revamp the leadership of UMNO with new blood rising up to take power and control of the nation.
The dilemma’s ahead
The path ahead for Malaysia as a nation is fraught with danger and difficulties. Ever since the news portal Sarawak Report unveiled the hanky-panky of the 1MDB debacle and Najib’s involvement there has been a flurry of outrage and anger by Malaysians of all walks of life in the country.
Never before has a Malaysian prime minister sparked and triggered off such controversy and rage in the country and both Najib and Rosmah, rightly or wrongly, are now being blamed for all the problems with which this country is riddled.
In the 58 years of the existence of Malaysia as a nation, ever since 1957, and with Najib being the sixth prime minister, no paramount leader of the country has created such a scenario where the anger and resentment of the people are beginning to boil over.
This is why many ordinary Malaysians are wondering what has gone wrong with the nation’s system of parliamentary democracy as it rightly should cater for and easily accommodate the removal of Najib from the chair of prime minister as what was done to Tunku Abdul Rahman.
These are among the dilemma’s people in this country are facing. But the reason for this is simple. During the time the Tunku was in power and up to the point of his exit, Malaysia was a democracy. But no longer is this true.
The deterioration in Malaysia’s parliamentary democracy begin with the unfair ouster of the Tunku by Tun Abdul Razak and now his son, Najib, is tinkering with democracy and has slowly but steadily transformed this nation into a police state.
This is the reason why Najib is still able to be in the chair of prime minister despite being guilty of a litany of atrocities and wrongdoings that have caused a lot of misery, hardship and suffering on the ordinary people of this country.
Waiting for the right time
The best thing that Malaysians can do is to, like Mahathir is poising himself, to wait for the right time to evict Najib as prime minister. The Mahathir foray is probably Malaysia’s best hope of trying to get this country back on track.
This is why every Malaysian worth their salt will do well to fully back Mahathir in his bid although the former prime minister himself is guilty of atrocities and wrongdoings. It is really a case of Malaysians being caught between the devil and the deep blue sea.
Since Malaysians are actually torn between a rock and a hard place, the best thing to do is to opt for the lesser of two evils and swing with Mahathir and to hope for better times with this outcome. This is because the Najib regime is worse than the Mahathir regime.
But the Mahathir regime being only slightly better off than the Najib regime will cause some easing of tensions and hardship in the country and probably an economy that will be in a much better shape and is more productive and useful for Malaysians.
But under the current leadership of Najib, Malaysians should say enough is enough and arrest the rot and quickly as possible put a stop from the country faring from bad to worse and eventually ending up as a failed state in which all hell breaks loose. - MAILBAG
