Minister says it is unreasonable for public to expect local councils to check premises for Aedes mosquitoes and that they should keep their homes clean.
In a report by Malay Mail Online, the Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister said, “The problem with dengue is that it is the human’s fault. People want the best looking houses with curves and corners but we are so lazy to clean up.”
He also said more awareness was needed among the people to keep their surroundings clean and that the heavy reliance on local councils to check for Aedes mosquito breeding grounds in private homes simply did not make sense.
“There has to be awareness with the people because if the ministry has to check all the houses one by one, it doesn’t make sense,” the news portal quoted Rahman, who is also MP for Kota Belud, as saying.
It was recently reported that dengue cases nationwide had spiked to disturbing levels, with over 3,300 cases reported in the first week of 2016 alone.
The Health Ministry warned that the El Nino effect – a weather phenomenon that brings hot and dry weather – could cause numbers to increase by 50 per cent.
El Nino is expected to hit the country from January to March.
