While attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali has trumpeted that he is a law man and will act according to legal ambit, DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang wonders if he has the strength of will to follow through if Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak needs to be prosecuted.
"If the MACC investigation papers propose the prosecution of the prime minister on corruption charges or other offences under the law, will Apandi have the gumption and guts to approve such prosecutions?" he asked during a speech he delivered in Lenggong, Perak yesterday.
Each and every Malaysian, even in the most remote villages and corners, are watching the case intently, said Lim.
He added that the rakyat is wary of the prime minister whom they see as having betrayed his earlier slogan of 'People First. Performance Now', with 'Najib First, Performance Now'.
Lim pointed out that former AG Abu Talib Othman had called on Apandi to treat with urgency the investigation papers into SRC International and the RM2.6 billion deposited into Najib's personal accounts, which had been submitted to the AG's Chambers.
Lim said Abu Talib had noted the urgency of the matter as it touched on the very integrity of the office of the prime minister.
“The world is watching Malaysia”, Lim quoted Abu Talib, reminding the current AG of the matter's importance as it involves a sitting prime minister.
Lim pointed out that Abu Talib had even suggested that Apandi work overtime to go through the voluminous documents because it is his duty to make a decision as soon as possible.
Apandi had told earlier Malaysiakini that he needs time to go through the investigation papers when asked when will he come out with his decision
Critics, however, are sceptical that the AG will do anything, some seeing his sudden replacement of the supposedly unwell Abdul Gani Patail, as a way to white-wash and bury investigations involving the prime minister.
Apandi has repeatedly denied such claims, saying that there is no interference in the ongoing probes.
Lim, the Gelang Patah MP, reiterated that “top priority” should be given to the MACC investigation papers. -Mkini
