Activist probed for sedition over Citizens' Declaration petition

Activist Azrul Mohd Khalib who started the online petition in support of the Citizens' Declaration is being probed by police under the Sedition Act 1948.
He was summoned to the Petaling Jaya district police headquarters today for his statement to be recorded under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act.
"He was asked a number of questions about the petition and finally the police confiscated his mobile phone and laptop," Azrul's lawyer, Melissa Sasidaran, told journalists outside the police headquarters.
The petition entitled ‘Petitioning Prime Minister Dato Seri Najib Razak To Quit’ was launched by eminent figures such as former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad as well as opposition and civil society leaders on March 4.
It called for the removal of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and the implementation of institutional reforms.
The Citizens’ Declaration has purportedly garnered 250,000 signatures.
Shortly after, Azrul started an online version of the petition on change.org which had since garnered more than 51,000 signatories.
“When it comes to the system of democracy which we have, the rakyat, too, want to state what they feel. I think the rakyat should do so,” Azrul told reporters after giving his statement to the police.
Meanwhile, blogger Joe Haidi Sulaiman who operates the blog suarakamiibaru.blogspot.my was also called up by police today over an article claiming that the attorney-general (Mohamed Apandi Ali) is in possession of evidence concerning Najib's wrongdoing.
His lawyer Raul Lee said Joe was being investigated under Section 499 of the Penal Code for criminal defamation. -mkini
