MIC Youth has expressed dissatisfaction over the manner in which the police handled a case of a Hindu temple being vandalised in Ipoh over the weekend.
The wing's secretary Arvind Krishnan said it is not for the police to send the suspect involved to Hospital Bahagia, which treats those with mental disorders.
"MIC Youth is frustrated with how the (temple desecration) case was conducted.
"They (the police) should have produced him in court. And the court should decide if he needed medical help," he told a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.
Arvind argued that the manner in which the police handled the case could have led to dissatisfied quarters making racial and religiously sensitive remarks.
"We hope the police will charge him in court as soon as possible.
"In relation to that, MIC Youth is planning to hand a memorandum over to the Perak police chief regarding this issue later today," he said.
Suspect a former medical doctor
The suspect, a former medical doctor, was arrested when he crashed his car soon after he fled from the scene.
He had earlier demolished several statues in the Sree Muneeswarar Amman temple in Ipoh.
Following this, inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar said the suspect had a mental condition.
Khalid also denied that the suspect was linked to terror organisations, stating that the latter acted on his own.
The police chief also advised all quarters against speculating on the issue, warning that it could lead to undesirable circumstances.
Meanwhile, Perak health, public transport, non-Muslim affairs, national integration and new village development committee chairperson Dr Mah Hang Soon was reported as saying that the 29-year-old suspect suffered from a bipolar disorder.
Mah also revealed the suspect was employed by Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun for five days before handing in a 24-hour notice of resignation on April 22, two days before the incident.
The state government has pledged RM30,000 to repair the temple. -Mkini
