Government departments and agencies should learn from the weaknesses pointed out by the auditor-general to avoid a repeat of extravagance, wastefulness, and abuse.
Auditor-General Ambrin Buang said elements such as efficiency, economy, and effectiveness should always be practised in the management of public funds so that every sen spent provides maximum benefit.
"The principle of value for money in government spending must be given serious attention because negative things will give a bad impression among the public about the ability of civil servants in managing their funds.
"If this happens, it will tarnish the good name of heads of departments and the agencies. Therefore, always give serious attention in matters relating to finance by ensuring all procedures are followed to avoid being reprimanded by the auditors," he said at the opening of Wisma Audit Pahang by the Sultan of Pahang, Sultan Ahmad Shah, in Kuantan today.
Also present at the ceremony were the Tengku Mahkota of Pahang, Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, and Pahang Menteri Besar Adnan Yaakob.
The building costing RM19.5 million was fully completed in January 2013 before handed over to the National Audit Department on August 26, 2013.
Ambrin hopes government departments and agencies take measures to improve planning, implementation, and monitoring, to avoid project delay which will result in higher costs.
"Government agencies must also implement value management in the management of development projects.
"Ensure that the programmes or projects really benefit the target groups as it will raise public confidence in the ability of civil servants."
He said as a professional and independent body, the National Audit Department strives to foster good governance among government departments and agencies entrusted with prudent management of public funds.
