Hailing from Kedah, Abu Kedah is the latest IS militant group member from Malaysia to be killed in Syria.
PETALING JAYA: Another Malaysian, said to have joined the Islamic State (IS) militant group, is believed to have been killed in Syria on April 17.
Hailing from Pendang in Kedah, Abd Ghani Yaacob, who is also known as Abu Bashir Al Malazy or “Abu Kedah”, was reportedly killed after being shot in the chest in a battle against Bashar al-Assad’s army.
His death brings the total number of Malaysians, who are part of IS, killed in the Syrian conflict to 19.
Utusan Malaysia reported that Abd Ghani was believed to have previously worked as a crane operator in Kuala Lumpur.
Confirming the matter, Bukit Aman’s Counter Terrorism Assistant Director-General Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said Abd Ghani also had networking ties with several other IS militants from Kedah.
He had reportedly left for Syria with the help of Mohammad Wanddy Mohamed Jedi last December.
Utusan Malaysia said Abd Ghani was allegedly drawn to the conflict in Syria via Facebook and had taken an interest in the Salafi Jihadi teachings by the militant group in 2013.
