Anti-GST rally-goer remanded for probe under Sedition Act

The police have been granted a two-day remand order against activist Muhammad Zhafran Muhammad Zuhdi for investigation under Section 4(1)(C) of the Sedition Act.
Muhammad Zhafran was arrested at about 3.30pm in Kuala Lumpur yesterday after he stuck a caricature of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak on a police car at the anti-goods and services tax rally.
Zhafran was taken to the Dang Wangi district police station and his lawyer, Nik Zarith Nik Moustpha, told Malaysiakini that the remand hearing was held this morning.
“Zhafran was held overnight at the police station. The police had requested for four days remand but the magistrate only allowed two, until tomorrow,” said Nik Zarith.
Zhafran was initially detained under Section 504 of the Penal Code that dealt with intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of peace.
KL police chief Amar Singh had reportedly confirmed only one participant was arrested during the rally that saw about 2,000 protesters marching from Sogo shopping complex to Dataran Merdeka under scorching heat.
The anti-GST demonstration also saw various Pakatan Harapan leaders making speeches urging for the resignation of Najib and condemning the GST.
Former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad also made a surprise appearance shortly before the rally ended. -Mkini
