Don't get emotional when debating, speaker tells MPs

PARLIAMENT Before the start of a debate on a bill today, Dewan Rakyat Speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia had some advice for lawmakers: do not engage in emotional debate.
He said this following an incident when a parliamentarian had to be hospitalised after a war of words with a minister yesterday.
The advice came before the start of the debate on the Dangerous Drugs (Special Preventive Measures) (Amendment) Bill 2015.

Amanah Sepang MP Hanipa Maidin was sent to hospital after a heated debate with Domestic Trade, Coorperatives and Consumerism Minister Hamzah Zainuddin.
"The Sepang (MP) fell sick after a row with the minister during a debate on a bill," he said.
"I have no doubt that (this could happen) as a result of a heated debate. So, I am pretty serious in this: let's make the incident a lesson," he noted.
"I am serious because I never had heart attack and hypertension before I took the job (of speaker) in 2008. But I had to undergo an operation in 2012," he added.
"So take (my advice) seriously as we are taking a huge responsibility when we debate in the public interest, so do this (debate) moderately instead of emotionally until we fall sick and can no longer perform our duty," he said.
