Global probe on 1MBD finally reaches our shores

YOURSAY | ‘The whole world is coming down hard on Malaysia, all because of one man…’
Negarawan: The US Department of Justice (DOJ) probably has access to all the important evidence that it needs in the 1MDB mega scandal.
This is the electronic age and the DOJ is an expert in information gathering, with or without the cooperation of the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM), Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), Bank Negara and Attorney-General’s Chambers.
If the inspector-general of police (IGP) is eager to extend his fullest cooperation, his response would have been different, and certainly not in an intimidating manner as he has done.
Heads of the Malaysian institutions are best reminded that if the US senses a cover-up in protecting laundering activities involving US dollars in Malaysia, the country runs a risk of being banned from trading in US dollars. This would be disastrous for the economy.
Eventually, the perpetrators behind 1MDB will face justice outside of Malaysia because all the key government institutions here have been compromised.
Despite proclaiming itself as "Islamic", the government has completely lost its moral bearings.
Vijay47: Khalid Abu Bakar, why are you adopting this confrontational stance? One would have thought that as Malaysia's head of police, your statement would have been along the lines of:
"If US officials wish to question anyone in Malaysia, certain protocols need to be complied with. Have said that, they can be assured of our full cooperation as we too are equally committed to unravelling the truth behind 1MDB and if necessary, institute prosecution against those who have broken the law."
On the contrary, you seem to have slung your six-shooters around your ample hips and heading to the OK Corral to stonewall the American enquiries. I can think of only two persons who would be rooting for you.
In the meantime, you might want to attend some intensive lessons in English - I am sure you wouldn't want to repeat your "Royal my foot" grasp of the language.
Further, be wary of silver flying contraptions, as the US now has that pesky habit of unleashing their drones. Or you could charge them with sedition.
Wg321: If officials from the DOJ were to interview Malaysians in the presence of PDRM officers, nobody will dare to talk because that person may be charged under the Sedition Act after long hours of interrogations in the police station when the DOJ officials have left.
It is better to play safe. Everybody knows that we are living in a climate of fear. It is not worth it being harassed in the police station for hours.
Wira: Is the IGP suggesting that if the DOJ officials don't comply with your condition, you are going to arrest them and deport them like what you did to the Australian journalists?
Pemerhati: The investigation by the DOJ will likely to get PM Najib Razak and his wife, Rosmah Mansor, really worried.
Even though they may be able to hinder the US investigations locally by using the IGP and others, they will not be able to influence the overseas investigations pertaining to 1MDB.
Particularly worrying for Rosmah would be the news from Sarawak Report that Mohamed Ahmed Badawy Al-Husseiny, the former CEO of Aabar Investments PJS, is under detention in Abu Dhabi and the government is processing a request for his extradition by the DOJ relating to charges concerning 1MDB.
Al-Husseiny has revealed himself to be the major investor in the Red Granite movie production company owned by Riza Aziz, Rosmah’s son from an earlier marriage.
The US investigation of Al-Husseiny could reveal if any 1MDB money was illegally used by Riza and their friend, Jho Low.
News reports say Jho Low is selling off some of his US assets at a loss. Will Riza do the same and quickly leave the US?
Gerard Lourdesamy: IGP, where is the evidence of the false news? So the investigations in the US, UK, Hong Kong, Singapore, Switzerland and Luxembourg are also false? Only our PM and government are telling the truth?
Malaysia has long been discredited because of its endemic corruption, abuse of power and reliance on draconian laws to hide the truth. The only traitors in the eyes of the rakyat are the politicians who are raping and looting the country on a daily basis.
Rupert16: The fact that foreigners are now doing the investigations is because agencies like the police and AG’s Chambers are trying to cover up for Najib, suppressing the truth and hampering real investigations.
Bumiputhran: Khalid, how come your Special Branch officers can go to Australia and interview convicted murderer Sirul Azhar Umar, who is under the care, control, and jurisdiction of the Australian government?
The Mask: Justice will be done. Honestly, do you really know who is discrediting Malaysia and who are the real traitors?
Look at the big picture. The whole world is coming down hard on Malaysia, all because of one man, and you are quibbling over a trivial issue. -Mkini
