Parliament rejects motion on ‘unusual flows of money’

PARLIAMENT The Dewan Rakyat has rejected an emergency motion brought by a PKR lawmaker to debate the RM1.1 billion extraordinary flows of funds involving Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak as revealed by Australian media.
Hee Lay Sian (PKR-Petaling Jaya Selatan) had filed the motion following the March 28 report of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) titled ‘State of Fear: Murder and Money in Malaysia’.
In the motion, Hee sought the House to pass a ruling to have the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) immediately probe the media who carried the report.
“In view of the report involving public interest, which may tarnish the image of the nation and of the prime minister, it should be prioritised,” he said in the motion filed in March 31.
The motion, however, was rejected by Dewan Rakyat speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia in his chambers as the lawmaker had raised a question that the government has yet to verify.
The speaker has today rejected Hee’s request via a letter.
An unhappy Hee voiced his protest to deputy speaker Ronald Kiandee, who chaired the meeting this morning.
“The speaker rejected the motion because the authorities hadn’t verified (the matter). However, Malaysia has confirmed that, admitting (Najib) had received part of the money,” Hee told the House.
His argument was not accepted by the deputy speaker, who said the proper channel for him to protest a speaker’s ruling is through a motion.
Hee told Malaysiakini through a WhatsApps message that the reason given by the Pandikar was not reasonable.
“The Malaysian government admitted (receiving) part of the money from a Saudi royal. The reason given by the speaker was not reasonable,” he said.
