After Thai bombings, Hishammuddin may call for border talks

We should never think that we are excluded from terror threats, says defence minister

KUALA LUMPUR: In the wake of bombings in southern Thailand, Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said today that a meeting of the bilateral General Border Committee (GBC) might be called to discuss strengthening defences.
Four Thais were killed and about 36 others, including 10 foreigners, injured when bombs exploded in five provinces including Hua Hin and Phuket.
Thai security forces are reported to have found a serial number of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) on a fragment of a mobile phone used to detonate one of the bombs. While the mobile device was partially destroyed in the blast, the serial number was still legible.
Hishammuddin said at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today that intelligence between Malaysia and Thailand must be further solidified.
“I will contact Thailand’s Defence Minister to see if we need to hold a GBC meeting,” he said. “This is important because violence and terrorism have intensified and we should never think that we are excluded from such threats.”
Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar has also said the police are willing to cooperate with their Thai counterparts to facilitate investigations.
Hishammuddin said “soft targets” of terrorists, such as dams, airports and shopping malls should not be given any less attention.
