The beneficiaries of a Malaysian development fund that Malay elites and top American investors allegedly used to "illicitly" produce the "Wolf of Wall Street" are suing to get their share of box office profits.
The 1 Malaysia Development Berhad Fund, launched in 2009, is supposed to "drive strategic initiatives for long-term economic development for the benefit of a broad spectrum of Malaysians."
But Riza Shahriz Bin Abdul Aziz, the Malaysian Prime Minister's stepson, and film producer Joey McFarland allegedly used the fund’s money to make the "Wolf of Wall Street." The money for the tale of Wall Street excess was "funneled in whole or in part” through Goldman Sachs, the suit says.
The fund didn't get a penny from their studio, Red Granite Pictures, or the Oscar-nominated Leonardo DiCaprio film — which has grossed more than $392 million in global box office receipts, according to court papers.
Aziz, McFarland and financier Low Taek Jho were well aware that the money flowing into their studio was "illicitly obtained," the lawsuit says.
"They nevertheless proceeded to spend that money on Red Granite's productions — and on sumptuous parties featuring celebrities-and to take profits for their own enjoyment," the suit says.
SPLURGING MONEY THEY KNEW DIDN'T BELONG TO THEM

"They materially benefited from money traceable to the 1MDB Fund. The Fund, in contrast, received nothing. The Fund instead suffered the loss of the $155 million these Defendants misappropriated to make the motion picture."
Red Granite, the suit points out, threw a birthday bash for DiCaprio in November 2012. The studio spent more than $1 million on booze — mostly on $25,000-a-pop bottles of champagne.
DiCaprio was also gifted Marlon Brando's 1955 Academy Award best actor statuette — which reportedly cost $600,000, the suit charges.
Red Granite also paid for Aziz, Jho Low, McFarland, and DiCaprio's New Year's Eve fete on Dec. 31, 2012, the filing says. The festivities, which included a private jet, were held both in Australia and Las Vegas, the suit claims.

Meanwhile, Aziz and playboy financier Jho Low siphoned "several hundred million dollars of misappropriated funds to purchase luxurious real estate."
Leonardo DiCaprio played Jordan Belfort in "The Wolf of Wall Street."
Jho Low, a family friend of Aziz, and McFarland also were "gifted" $100 million in artwork allegedly acquired with money from the fund.
The civil suit comes several weeks after the U.S. Department of Justice sought to recover more than $1 billion missing from the development fund — including profits from the Martin Scorsese-directed film.
Aziz, McFarland, and DiCaprio's reps didn't immediately comment. Red Granite denied any wrongdoing after the feds filed their action.
A rep for Goldman Sachs, which is also named as a defendant in the new suit, said it “received no proceeds of the offerings." "We intend to vigorously contest plaintiffs' misguided decision to include the firm as a defendant," the rep said.
