Malaysians bag RM5.6m in Dota 2 tournament

All eyes may be on the Rio Olympics but in the e-sports arena, a group of Malaysians made their mark after bagging US$1.4 million (RM5.6 million) at the International 2016.
Team Fnatic, comprising four Malaysians and a Filipino, placed fourth in the world's largest annual Dota 2 tournament in Seattle, USA.
The Malaysians are Chai Yee Fung (Mushi), Yeik Zheng Nai (MidOne), Khoo Chong Xin (Ohaiyo) and Adam Erwann Shah (343) while Djardel Jicko Mampusti (DJ) is from the Phillippines.
Fnatic is a European team which started off with mostly UK players but now comprise mostly Malaysians.
Fnatic secured their top four spot after defeating South Korean team MVP Phoenix in Round 4.
However, they were defeated by US-based Digital Chaos in the semi-finals but still managed to walk away with seven percent of the prize pool.
Fnatic had in earlier stages defeated other formidable teams such as Team Liquid and Alliance.
Their prize money is subject to sponsor deduction and taxes before being split five ways between the players.
The remaining teams - Wings Gaming, Evil Geniuses and Digital Chaos - will vie for the top three spots in the grand final.

The top three teams will walk away with US$9.1 million (RM36.4 million), US$3.4 million (RM13.6 million) and US$2.2 million (RM8.8 million) respectively.
The International, which focuses on Dota 2, has grown to become the biggest e-sports tournament in the world.
In Dota 2, two teams comprising five members are pit against each other.
Each player controls a character with unique abilities and have to work together to destroy the opponent's base.-Mkini
