Bersih supporters egged, kicked by red shirts in Sabak Bernam

Two men wearing Bersih T-shirts were pelted with eggs by red shirt supporters in Sabak Bernam today.

The two motorcyclists were attacked when they crossed the street into the red shirts area.

An eyewitness said the men approached the red shirts after they were pelted with eggs from across the street.

Police however said the men had wanted to go home, and decided to go through the road controlled by the red shirts.

After approaching the red shirts, one man retreated, but another, whose bike had crashed, stood his ground and was pelted with more eggs.

A red shirts supporter then gave him a flying kick to the back, sending him sprawling to the ground. [See video]

A police officer then broke through the crowd to assist the Bersih biker.

The man was then kicked a second time by another individual from the back, while the police officer was calling for calm.

Later the man was escorted away from the scene, after which red shirts leader Jamal Md Yunos appeared and asked his followers to lift the man's bike.

Jamal then personally handed the battered bike back to the cops.

Sabak Bernam was the end destination for today’s Bersih convoy from Teluk Intan, Perak.

The red shirts had warned that they would prevent Bersih from entering Sabak Bernam.

Besides two bikers, others including riot police were also pelted with eggs.

Speaking to reporters after the Bersih convoy dispersed, Jamal said the egg pelting was out of his hands.

“It’s a good thing they threw eggs. What if they threw stones?”

He then defended the kicks to the biker, saying his boys had been provoked.

“They knew this is the red shirts area yet they come to provoke us.

“If they want to show they are great by crashing our area, that is their fault.

“Whatever happens, we are not responsible, because if it wasn’t for Bersih this wouldn’t have happened.”

Meanwhile, Sabak Bernam district police chief Nor Azmi Isa said there was no need to probe the egg pelting as no one was hurt.

He said three red shirts were also been detained for “indexing” due to their “naughtiness”.

However, he said they had not committed a crime.

As for the kicking incident, Azmi said the matter will be investigated.

"We will investigate the incident and tra k down the main responsible for the kick.

"We will also call witnesses to record their statements," he said. -Mkini
