While people with influence like the Group of 25 (G25) write letters and give opinions that the country is on a slippery slope, they only want to keep doing that from their armchairs in their comfort zones.
Surely these people with (past) influence can see the huge uphill task faced by Bersih and other civil and civic society groups in asking for basic electoral reforms or better public transport? The powers that be and their media easily demonise the good intentions of such civil citizenry and even allegedly fund goons to do their behest.
I would urge the G25 to get off their armchairs and march with those with non-political demands, like Bersih and Research for Social Advancement (Refsa), to prick the conscience of the subordinates they mentored so that politicians who are going for short-term gains are questioned and set on the right track.
After all, the people in the corridors of power and their implementation agencies presently are all juniors who worked for those now in the G25 and other such groups.
Just writing letters to the press is clearly not enough. Make your influence count.
Evil triumphs when good people don’t get off their butts.
