Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the opposition, including PAS, will lose in the next general election if the Islamic party refuses to work together.
Mahathir, who is also Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) chairperson, added that it was “very sad” that PAS is refusing to work with DAP.
“PAS elected members increased because working with DAP, Chinese voters helped PAS to win in areas where there were quite big numbers of Chinese voters.
“I hope to be able to talk with PAS to explain that if they don’t want to be in a coalition with us, they in fact will be helping the government because they are going to lose many seats,” he told a forum in Petaling Jaya today.
Mahathir was responding to a question on PAS’ ultimatum that it will not work with DAP and anyone who wants to cooperate with the Islamic party must ditch DAP.
He said that if the situation degenerates into multi-cornered fights against BN in the next general election, then the ruling coalition will surely win.
PAS is still bitter with DAP for supporting Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah), a splinter party of PAS.
However, this is not the only hurdle Bersatu is facing in trying to reach out to PAS and uniting the opposition.
Asked how Mahathir can reconcile with PAS as he is against the implementation of hudud advocated by PAS, the former prime minister said they cannot focus on differences if the opposition is to oust BN.
“There are difference between us, but if we stress on differences, we can’t work together.
“So we want to work to change the government that is very oppressive. It is not liberal.
“After that, we handle the problems together,” he said.
