PETALING JAYA: The family of a student who was caned in school sparking a debate on corporal punishment has today made peace with the teacher involved.
The mother of the student and the teacher shook hands at the end of a meeting between them arranged by Johor’s education exco Aminolhuda Hassan, Sinar Harian reports.
Aminolhuda said both parties apologised to one another.
“The meeting went well, both parties apologised and the student withdrew her police report yesterday,” the paper quoted him as saying.
Aminolhuda said the incident “involves the credibility of the teaching profession and the process of the moulding of a student as outlined by the education ministry”.
A video of the student’s mother confronting the teacher for caning her daughter had gone viral, alongside pictures of the girl’s bruises on her legs and hands.
It was believed that the teacher punished the student for calling him “ah kua”, or effeminate person. - FMT
