Cops arrest lawyer accused of groping, threatening another lawyer

Police had detained a lawyer following a report accusing him of groping another lawyer and threatening the alleged victim after she warned him not to misbehave.
Petaling Jaya district police chief Mohd Zani Che Din said the man, who is in his mid-30s, was detained on Tuesday.
“We recorded his statement and released him on police bail," he told Malaysiakini this evening.
According to the report, filed on Sunday night, the 33-year-old complainant claimed that the suspect groped her twice during the Criminal Lawyers' Annual party at a hotel in Petaling Jaya the night before.
The woman, who claimed to be a former deputy public prosecutor in the district, said she warned the suspect when he groped her and distanced herself from him.
However, she alleged that the man, whom she claimed was drunk, followed her and started to threaten as well as hurled profanities at her.
The suspect, alleged the complainant, said that he was not afraid of her being a former DPP.
She also claimed that several other guests at the event had witnessed the incident.
Meanwhile, Mohd Zani said police are investigating the case under Section 354 of the Penal Code for assault with intent to outrage the modesty of a woman, as well as Section 509 of the Penal Code for insulting the modesty of a person.
Malaysiakini has also contacted Bar Council chairperson Abdul Fareed Abdul Gafoor for comment. - Mkini
