Malaysians must be more concerned about Azmin Ali's performance as economic affairs minister as opposed to his alleged sexual trysts with another man, according to Gerakan vice-president Baljit Singh.
He said everyone, including the media and politicians, should be discussing the nation's economic situation instead.
Baljit argued that if politicians spent their energy on strategising and improving the economy, this would be more beneficial for the nation and Malaysia could have been a superpower by now.
He was also upset that the public pounced on the sex videos but was silent about the tragic deaths of 14 Orang Asli in Gua Musang, Kelantan.
"Is this what Malaysians are all about?"
"Take the prime minister and all his cabinet members to task, criticise or slam them for their poor performance. That is the hallmark of an intelligent nation.
"Politicians should focus on their day jobs instead of trying to kill each other with what happens in the bedroom. Have we really not moved on from 1998?" he asked.
Baljit questioned if these politicians' KPI included scrutinising what their opponents did behind closed doors.
"And to the media, are you happy being someone's tool to kill off an opponent's political career?” he asked.
Baljit said the nation has been shocked with several "sex scandals" since 1998, which has turned Malaysia into a laughing stock.
"So-called scandals are energy-zapping and does nothing to develop your brains. At worst, it is fodder for gossips and nonsensical chatter, which wastes time to the point of neglecting work, for some people. So please, refrain from your obsession with the sexual behaviour of others.
"Don't give certain quarters the motivation to go on fooling us with gutter politics and dirty tactics to kill off their opponents.
"We are all complicit in this if we continue to let it go on, again and again. We only have ourselves to blame if the country descends into oblivion," he added.
Azmin (above), who is also PKR deputy president, has denied the sex videos, describing them as a nefarious plot to ruin his political career.
Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad also dismissed the videos as fake.
Yesterday, the police said it is in the process of verifying the authenticity of the video clips, which were released by anonymous individuals.
Those who indulge in such activities can be charged under Section 377A, which stipulates that any person who has sexual connection with another person by the introduction of the penis into the anus or mouth of the other person is said to commit carnal intercourse against the order of nature.
Previously, PKR president Anwar Ibrahim was accused of sodomy twice but has maintained that the charges were fabricated by his political rivals. - Mkini
