PAS must lead in new grouping, says Terengganu delegate

Pengkalan Berangan assemblyman Sulaiman Sulong.
PETALING JAYA: A PAS delegate today mooted the formation of a new grouping between PAS and political parties or Islamic NGOs so that the “future of the country is not destroyed”.
Sulaiman Sulong, who is also PAS’ information chief in Marang, said PAS had gone through unpleasant experiences in trying to implement this agenda in the past.
“We know how difficult it is to lead one big ‘gagasan’,” said the representative from Terengganu, at PAS’ 65th muktamar in Kuantan.
“We were once with Umno and also felt how painful and bitter it was to be divorced without ‘talak’ ,” he said, referring to the pronouncement of divorce in Islam.
He added that a similar experience happened when PAS joined the Semangat 46 group.
Sulaiman, who is also Pengkalan Berangan assemblyman, said PAS had also worked with PKR and DAP at one point “to save Malaysia”.
“However, we were slandered for standing firm in defending Islamic principles and policies to the point that we were forced to leave,” he said in his motion of thanks on PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang’s policy speech.
He said PAS should lead in any new grouping of people with common interests to push the Islamic agenda, unify the people and preserve harmony in society.
In March, top leaders of Umno and PAS said both parties were “getting married” and pledged to work together as a united opposition bloc in the Dewan Rakyat.
Apart from Umno, Sulaiman did not list what other political parties PAS should work with.
‘A sin to act unfairly towards non-Muslims’
Tumpat MP Che Abdullah Mat Nawi.
Meanwhile, another PAS delegate today said it was a sin for Muslims not to act fairly towards non-Muslims.
Tumpat MP Che Abdullah Mat Nawi, from Kelantan PAS, said this was in line with PAS’ struggles in ensuring justice for all races and religions.
“We are responsible not only in fulfilling promises to the rakyat; we are responsible to God.
“It would be a mistake, a sin for us in the Islamic leadership, if we are not fair to non-Muslims.”
He said the PAS supporters’ group, the Dewan Himpunan Penyokong PAS, is open to non-Muslims. He said until today, members from this group had stayed loyal to PAS. - FMT
