Quest for Sarawak’s independence an impossible dream, says analyst

Awang Azman Awang Pawi of Universiti Malaya.
KUCHING: Parti Bumi Kenyalang’s (PBK) quest for Sarawak’s independence will almost be impossible to achieve because of the strong spirit of federalism among the people in the state, a political analyst said.
Universiti Malaya’s Awang Azman Awang Pawi said the party’s slogan to gain independence in the next state election will fail.
He said the idea to get Sarawak to secede from Malaysia had come only from a small group of people.
“The sentiments of Sarawakians are to get back their rights in accordance with the spirit of Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), no more no less,” he told FMT.
Awang said a survey carried out last year showed that 80% of Sarawakians were satisfied and proud to be part of Malaysia.
The remaining 20% said they were not happy because of issues related to MA63, unfair developments, slow decentralisation and royalty payments on oil and gas.
He cautioned, however, that although those favouring a pullout were only a small number, it must be tackled to prevent it from spreading. - FMT
