Sarawak eyes power supply to Indonesia

Sarawak Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg (in yellow baju) at Sarawak Energy Berhad’s Gawai Raya celebration in Kuching today.
KUCHING: Sarawak wants to supply electricity to Indonesia if its capital is moved from Jakarta to Kalimantan.
Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg said since the proposed new capital would be closer to Sarawak, this could open the door for the state to establish a Borneo-wide electricity grid and supply electricity to Indonesia.
‘I believe that with the availability of expertise and talents in terms of engineering skills, we can collaborate with Indonesia, Brunei as well as Sabah,” he said at Sarawak Energy Berhad’s (SEB) Gawai Raya celebration here today.
“Therefore, I believe that SEB is capable of transforming itself as one of the biggest power generators in the region.”
Abang Johari said Sarawak was currently a big producer of clean energy due to its hydropower development.
With a vast range of raw materials in the state, he said SEB should continue to look for sources of energy to be marketed overseas, which would increase its revenue.
Indonesia recently announced a 10-year plan to transfer all government offices to a new capital city. Three locations were proposed – Palangkaraya, Tanah Bumbu and North Penajam Paser – all in Kalimantan. - FMT
