PETALING JAYA: The suspension of the government’s Islamic Economic Development Foundation (Yapeim) director-general Abibullah Samsudin has been extended by another month, its board of trustees said today.
In announcing this, Yapeim chairman Mohd Daud Bakar said the suspension, which was originally supposed to end on June 12, has been extended to July 12.
He said the suspension of Abibullah’s services was extended to enable Yapeim to investigate the matter in a “transparent and fair” manner.
He also said it was aimed at protecting the interests of both parties before any decision was made.
“The suspension of duty or service by employers is a common practice for the purpose of investigating any misconduct or to deal with disciplinary matters, as provided for under Section 14(2) of the Employment Act 1955,” he added in a statement.
He also said the services of acting director-general Parihah Hasan had been extended as well.
Abibullah sparked controversy last month when a video emerged showing him urging his staff not to vote for Pakatan Harapan in last year’s general election.
In the clip, he said: “I will check with the Election Commission on all Yapeim staff. I will check one by one, where you voted and who you voted for.
“If there are those who vote for Pakatan Harapan, you are not fit to work in Yapeim.”
The revelation of the video came hot on the heels of allegations of financial mismanagement in Yapeim, including one involving RM1 million meant for orphans that was allegedly used by Yapeim to pay its legal fees.
Daud previously said Abibullah’s suspension was to enable the foundation to carry out an internal inquiry into his alleged misconduct and not solely over a speech he allegedly made before GE14.
Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Fuziah Salleh, who holds the Islamic affairs portfolio, later said any action to be taken against Abibullah will be decided by the foundation’s board. - FMT
