Tariffs Cancelled - Trump "Deal" Squeezes Mexico To Be More "Responsible"

This is from the New York Times. The US trade tariffs threatened against Mexico have been 'cancelled' or postponed or kept within easy reach etc.

President Trump threatened Mexico with tariffs
deal to avert tariffs that Trump announced on Friday night

consists of actions Mexico promised to take
in prior discussions with US over past several months

Mexico agreed to “deploy National Guard, giving priority to southern border”

centerpiece of deal was asylum-seekers remain in Mexico while cases proceed

Trump hailed agreement on Twitter
Everyone excited about new deal with Mexico!”
He thanked president of Mexico for “working so long and hard”
to reduce surge of migration into US

threatened Mexico with escalating tariffs — 5% growing to 25%

after nine days Trump accepted Mexico’s promises

Mexicans agreed to move faster, more aggressively to deter migrants

promise to deploy 6,000 national guard troops larger than previous pledge
Mexico agree to accelerate Migrant Protection Protocols
asylum-seekers to wait in Mexico

deep skepticism whether Mexicans will follow through on promises
if that will reduce flow of migrants at southwestern border

making border “strong and secure” by working with Mexico to fulfill agreement

Trump use trade as bludgeon against Mexico
his core supporters angry at his inability to build border wall

May 24, 5,800 migrants — highest ever for one day — crossed on a single day
1,036 migrants caught on surveillance cameras crossing border en masse

Mexico opened negotiations to deploy troops against migrants
to stop migrants from flowing north through Mexico

deal might prove insufficient
section of agreement titled “Further Action”

warning to Mexico that Trump will pay close attention to daily migrant numbers

if numbers failed to change - back to negotiating table
“The tariff threat is not gone,” the official said.
“It’s suspended.”

My comments :

The problem is with Central America. Many movies have been made about the 'migrant caravans' that smuggle poor people from Central America through Mexico and into the US.

The heart rending 2009 movie Sin Nombre gives a vivid depiction of the migrant trails from Central America, through Mexico and then to the United States. The movie depicts the poverty, the desperation, the gangs involved, the drugs, the extreme violence and killing that exists on the Mexican side of the Mexican - US border.

Trump wants Mexico (which the Mexicans have agreed) to police their southern border (Mexican - Guatemalan border) more effectively to put a stop to these 'migrant caravans' that ultimately make their way north to the USA.

I agree with the skepticism if these 'measures' will work.

Lets live in the real world ok?   There are less jobs, less economic opportunities, less of everything in Central America. The people there are desperate.

Just like the Banglas, Indons, Myanmars, Nepalis and Indians in this part of the world.

It is not just the pull factor of the USA.
It is the push factor of the shit hole countries.

All the walls and the fences in the world will not be able to keep out people who are desperate to live and breathe in a free country.

The Great Wall of China did not keep out the Mongols (or the mythical Tao Tei).

It will be cheaper, safer and most importntly - economically profitable - to invest time, energy, money in those poor countries and bring them up as quickly as possible.

They need more China. Where is China?
