Bukit Aman says 'family money' after MP questions cop's RM400k watches

After coming under scrutiny from a backbencher, Bukit Aman said the two Rolex watches owned by a senior police officer were purchased using ‘family money’.

Bukit Aman Integrity and Standards Compliance director Azri Ahmad said this was based on an ongoing investigation against the senior officer.

"Initial results from the investigation confirmed that the two watches were bought using money belonging to his (the senior officer) mother and late father, who was a successful businessperson," said Azri in a statement today.

"The Integrity and Standards Compliance Department will continue the investigation from various angles," he added.

Earlier, Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng urged the police to issue a clarification after a 41-year-old housewife was charged at the Magistrate’s Court in Ipoh with stealing her police officer husband’s Rolex watches three years ago.

According to the charge sheet, she was charged with stealing a Rolex Sky-Dweller (Model 326135) with series number 0890R359 and Rolex GMT Master-II 9 (Model 116718 LN) with series number A9R56702.

“The estimated price for the watches stolen was RM207,000 for the Sky-Dweller and RM198,000 for the GMT Master-II 9.

“If we look at this case more closely, among the questions (that arise) is how a police officer is able to buy luxury items that cost hundreds of thousands of ringgit?” asked Lim.

The accused, Mou Ei Leen pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The offence was allegedly committed at a house in Pinggiran Rapat Ria in Ipoh, Perak in January 2021.

“Recently, we were also told that the income of the police is still on an outdated scale,” said Lim.

Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain

Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain recently called for adjustments to the police salary scale, saying the pay received by low-ranking personnel was inadequate.

Lim said, “It is the responsibility of the police to explain to the public how the police officer can get those two Rolex watches.

“Were the watches bought with the salary he received as a police officer or through other means?” - Mkini
