Make sure budget benefits reach people, Bersatu leader says

Bersatu information chief Razali Idris has called on the government of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to make sure the impact of Budget 2024 is really felt by the people of Malaysia.

In a statement, he said every time the national budget is presented, there is poor governance which means the implementation and assistance often do not reach the intended targets, are delayed, or otherwise lost.

“The big question now is the extent to which the Budget 2023 presented by the Unity Government has been achieved and the people have the right to know what has been realised or not. The same will apply to Budget 2024.

“This country is always given amazing figures, for example, the unemployment rate that was successfully lowered to 3.4 percent as of August 2023 but the fact is that many are still unemployed.

“These are not only graduates but those from the B40 and M40 groups who lost their jobs and then continue to struggle to find new jobs,” Razali (above) said.

He said the key thing is for Anwar’s government to ensure the improvement in the people’s standard of living must be more efficient without mismanagement, malpractice, leakage, bribery, nepotism, cronyism, and non-compliance in government financial management that results in revenue loss every year.

Yesterday Anwar, who is also the finance minister, tabled Budget 2024 in the Dewan Rakyat.

Razali also questioned the issue of foreign investment brought into the country and the announcement that the country successfully achieved approved investments worth RM132.6 billion for the first half of 2023 which created an estimated 51,000 job opportunities.

“The people want to know what the approved investment is and to what extent it has been successfully realised because sometimes it is stated that is approved but upon investigation, the approved investment project does not match the required conditions but this is not announced to the people,” he claimed without providing examples.

He also asked what Anwar meant when he said GDP growth for the year 2023 should be re-projected to around four percent.

“What does that mean? What actually is the projection in 2024?

“The people are also informed that this country is blessed with RON95 petrol prices among the cheapest in the world with the RM2.05 rate being even cheaper than Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, and Thailand.

“But what is the meaning that the finance minister is trying to convey, because of course, the people expect that cheaper petrol prices not only help daily expenses but also increase logistics and higher business delivery to boost the domestic economy.” - Mkini
