It is unfair to accuse Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi of not doing enough to secure the release of his jailed predecessor Najib Abdul Razak, said the latter’s son Mohd Nazifuddin.
“Umno has given a lot of help, it would not be right to blame a single person… The president has helped. Many others have helped.
“But the efforts (to free Najib) have not reached the right quarters. This struggle will not end. The issue will be discussed in all Umno meetings,” he said.
Nazifuddin (above) was responding to a question from an MIC member at an event in Kuala Lumpur last night that was part of a nationwide campaign to ensure “justice” for his father.
The Kuala Selangor MIC member asked if Zahid was an obstacle to freeing Najib from prison.
Meanwhile, Nazifuddin’s brother Mohd Nizar cited several examples, including MACC’s investigation of the SRC International case trial judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali, to argue that his father had been denied justice.
“I am of the opinion that the justice system must be revamped. I am asking the coalition government to do this,” the Peramu Jaya assemblyperson said in his speech.
Some 400 supporters turned up at the first session of the nationwide tour last night organised by Akademi Wasatiyyah Madani dan Team NR (Najib Razak) in Kampung Baru.
Apart from his two sons, Najib’s daughter Nooryana Najwa was also present.
Explaining Najib’s cases
A representative of the organisers Muhamad Mukhlis Maghribi said the campaign was organised to explain the former prime minister’s legal wrangles to the public.
“Najib has been in Kajang Prison for 432 days. There are many questions (about his cases) and rumours, so we want to provide explanations.
“There are those who proclaim to be the leader of Najib’s supporters and claim the former prime minister is asking his supporters to support Perikatan Nasional,” he added.
However, Mukhlis said the nationwide campaign is not intended to pressure the government.
Participants were also asked to lend their signatures to two petitions - to appeal to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to pardon Najib and for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to revamp the justice system.
On Aug 24 last year, Najib became the first Malaysian prime minister to land behind bars after the Federal Court upheld his conviction and 12-year prison sentence.
He is also on trial for other charges related to the 1MDB mega scandal. - Mkini
