'Bersatu can't act, wants to amend constitution only after we backed PM'

The six Bersatu MPs who voiced support for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim will not be affected by the party’s upcoming amendment of its constitution, said Gua Musang MP Mohd Azizi Abu Naim.

“As far as I know, the constitutional amendment that Bersatu is set to make will not affect the MPs because the amendment is being made after we voiced support for the prime minister.

“God willing, nothing will stop me from serving my constituents in this parliamentary term,” he told Malaysiakini.

Yesterday, Bersatu information chief Razali Idris announced the party will hold a special general assembly on March 2, where the fate of the six Bersatu MPs who switched allegiance and declared support for Anwar without quitting the party would be discussed.

“God willing, it will be the end (of the six MPs). Hopefully, Bersatu will rise again and continue to move forward,” Razali posted on Facebook with a letter containing details of the special general assembly.

Aside from Azizi, the five other MPs are Zulkafperi Hanapi (Tanjung Karang), Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal (Bukit Gantang), Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar), Zahari Kechik (Jeli), and Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan).

Elaborating, Azizi said it is not certain that the Registrar of Societies (ROS) would approve of Bersatu’s constitutional amendments.

“It is not like ROS would simply approve amendments to any party’s constitution, especially when they are done to assassinate the character of an elected lawmaker.

“God willing, the amendments will not affect my position as an MP, as well as my colleagues’, after backing the PM.”
