Police: Julau MP's brush with 'gangsters' due to RM5 ang pow

Julau MP Larry Sng’s close encounter with four alleged gangsters in his constituency recently stemmed from the RM5 ang pow he had given the latter.

According to district police chief Andam Sulin, the four suspects, aged between 32 and 53, were arrested on Feb 12, less than 24 hours after Sng lodged a report on the matter.

“Based on the police report lodged by the complainant, the four men were not happy with the RM5 ang pow given to them.

“Investigations found that one of the suspects added RM10 in the ang pow and returned it to Sng to show his dissatisfaction.

“However, the probe is still ongoing to find out the cause of the incident,” Andam was quoted as saying by The Borneo Post.

‘Red packets for children, not adults’

In a Facebook post, Sng clarified that the RM5 ang pows were meant for children and not adults.

He said the suspects insisted on getting ang pows despite him telling them that they contained small money.

The men then confronted Sng and demanded RM500, which the latter agreed to bank into the account of an acquaintance, he wrote.

Andam confirmed that the case is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation.

Yesterday, Sng told Malay Mail that he was visiting the Chinese community in Julau when he ran into a group of local gangsters.

The Parti Bangsa Malaysia president said the men told Sng’s supporters that they had prepared weapons in the car for an attack against Sng.

“But since that didn’t happen, an argument took place and when my supporters tried to calm the situation, they pushed a Tuai Rumah (longhouse chief) to the ground,” he said.
