MACC investigators picked up pro-Perikatan Nasional political activist Syarul Ema Rena Abu Samah, otherwise known as Ratu Naga, for questioning after raiding her house in Kuala Lumpur this morning.
According to her husband Ezad Zainal, a team of five MACC officers arrived at their house in Jalan Klang Lama just before 9.30am and started searching the premises for about 20 minutes.
He told Malaysiakini that the raiding party then seized several electronic devices, including a laptop and handphone, and took the items together with Syarul Ema to the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya.
Ezad and lawyer Nabila Khairuddin, who is representing Syarul, claimed that the officers refused to disclose further information including the reason they detained the activist.
“I called the investigating officer after learning about the incident, but he refused to tell me why MACC was detaining my client.
“He only told me to meet him at the MACC headquarters, so now I am on my way there,” Nabila said when contacted at about 11am.
Questioning over graft allegation
Meanwhile, sources close to the case told Malaysiakini that the activist was picked up to facilitate an investigation into a graft allegation made by Bersatu member Badrul Hisham Shaharin against Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin, a senior political secretary to the prime minister.
Badrul had accused Shamsul, through his staffers and proxies, of using their political allies to abuse NGO funds.
Shamsul has since denied the claims and initiated legal action against Badrul, who is also known as Chegubard.
MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki when contacted confirmed that the agency has picked up Syarul for questioning.
However, he denied that she was arrested.
“We only summoned her to record her statement, to facilitate investigation under Section 16 of the MACC Act,” Azam said, but declined to elaborate further. - Mkini
